# Create artifacts

Artifacts are durable outputs generated from one vault. They can combine source-backed narrative, tables, diagrams, charts, and next actions without losing the evidence behind the work.

## Available formats

Documents and reports can include headings, evidence links, tables, and rendered process diagrams. Workbooks can contain several named and styled sheets. Charts are stored as real image files.

## Create a useful artifact

Name four things in your request:

1. The audience
2. The decision or outcome
3. The time range
4. The evidence and sections that must be included

For example:

> Create an executive pilot brief for the Northstar operations leadership team. Include the current fulfillment flow, a process diagram, the six-week KPI trend, unresolved risks, owners, and the source date for every claim.

Alpha creates the artifact inside the active vault. It should not import unrelated context from another client merely to fill a missing section.

## Review the result

Open an artifact from the library or directly from chat.

Before sharing it:

* Check that the title and audience are correct.
* Open important evidence links.
* Confirm that inferences are labeled as inferences.
* Review unresolved contradictions.
* Check that owners and dates match the latest source.
* Confirm that every chart and table has a clear unit and time range.

## Edit and export

Use the artifact editor to refine the language or structure. Export a document or report as DOCX when another person needs to edit it, or PDF when the layout should remain fixed.

Workbook artifacts download as XLSX. Open them in a spreadsheet tool to continue calculations, add commentary, or share a tabular handoff.

## Share in Slack

Paste an Alpha artifact link into Slack to create a rich preview. When Slack Work Object Previews are configured for Alpha, the card shows the artifact title, type, file metadata, and a direct open action.

Slack must allowlist `alpha.openantares.com` for artifact links. The Alpha Slack app handles the authenticated preview and keeps vault authorization in effect when a person opens the artifact.

Artifacts inherit the source vault's sensitivity. A preview is not permission to open the underlying artifact. Share links only in conversations whose members should receive that client or project context.

## When an artifact cannot open

If an artifact card exists but its content panel fails:

1. Refresh the artifact once.
2. Confirm that you still have access to its vault.
3. Check that the stored content type matches the file, such as `text/markdown` for Markdown.
4. Try the direct **Open in Alpha** link.
5. Report the artifact ID and request ID if the failure continues.

The list card and the rendered content use separate reads. Seeing metadata does not prove that the content payload is valid.
